There is little doubt: Italy is still one of the most loved and visited countries in the world. Its richness in terms of traditions, culture, nature and gastronomy makes the ‘Made in Italy’ brand an irresistible attraction for its visitors, who also take the opportunity to go luxury shopping.
Some numbers
With more than 445 million presences, in 2024 Italy saw a 10% increase in tourist presences compared to 2022. In particular, luxury tourism has attracted ‘big spenders’ from Germany, the UK and the USA, who have invested almost EUR 8 billion in high-end purchases.
Most visited cities
Alongside luxury tourism is cultural tourism, driven by the great cities of Italy. Rome is confirmed as the most visited city in Italy, famous for its various archaeological sites and the history that permeates every building. It is experienced as an authentic experience, combining past and present, from the great Roman Empire to the events of the 20th century.
Next is Venice, which attracts tourists not only for its waterways, but also for its major cultural events, such as the Biennale and the Carnival. The year 2024 was the year of a new experiment to curb the excessive flow of tourists, with a €5 ticket to access St Mark's Square on weekends in the spring and summer season. In 2025 the fee should start on 18 April and be even doubled in price (depending on the advance booking). You can find the calendar and the complete access modalities at this link.
Last but not least, Milan, the fashion capital and an important centre for social events, fairs and international business. Just to name a couple, Milan is home to Fashion Week and the Salone del Mobile, but it does not skimp on historical attractions either, with its world-famous Duomo, the Castello Sforzesco and the Teatro alla Scala.
