In Pesaro, Italian Capital of Culture 2024, the ‘playful social experiment’ is back, as Jörg Karrenbauer of Rimini Protokoll defines it, having already winked at artificial intelligence in Milan in 2014 and in Cividale del Friuli in 2021. Now, however, the potential is all different.
Remote “X”
The Remote ‘X’ project, conceived and directed by Rimini Protokoll, a German theatre group founded in 2000 that often fuses its artistic creations with the playful use of technology, investigates the relationship between man and machine. 40 people at a time take part in this experiment, walking around the city with only headphones and a recorded voice.
But how does the individual behave within a group, especially when guided by an algorithm? The idea is to make the most of the visual and auditory experience, thanks to cinematic music and binaural recordings that make what is heard three-dimensional, correlating it with the surrounding landscape. So even the city is no longer just a city, but is slowly transformed into the set of a collective film.
An inclusive project
‘With Remote,’ emphasises Mayor Andrea Biancani, ’we close the circle of the great events of Pesaro Italian Capital of Culture, thanks to a social and group experiment that combines artificial intelligence with collaboration between individuals, exploring the streets of the city, among the beauties and features that distinguish Pesaro, and thus realising an initiative that also proves to be inclusive and accessible to all.
Yes, because the route is also suitable for people with autism, deaf or hard of hearing, blind or visually impaired, with motor disabilities or reduced mobility, according to accessibility levels ranging from ‘basic’ to ‘excellent’.
The scheduled appointments
The experiment, running from 3 to 16 October (excluding Sundays) for a total of 12 performances, lasts approximately 110 minutes. English-language replicas are scheduled on Friday 4, Wednesday 9 and Friday 11 October. The cost to participate is only €3. Further details can be found on the Municipality of Pesaro website.
